In some states like Washington, you don't need to register a kayak if it is strictly human-powered, such as paddling or pedaling. However, if you plan to use a trolling motor on federal waters, registration is required. States like Texas always mandate registration. To find up to date information, search for kayak registration along with your state on the government website.

We use WA as an example for the registration process: https://dol.wa.gov/vehicles-and-boats/boats/register-boat. We are located in Kirkland, where there are a few nearby registration offices: Eastside Auto Licensing in Kirkland (appointment only), Woodinville License Agency, and Bel-Red Auto License in Bellevue (no appointment, walk-in before 3 pm). For offices that don't take appointments, expect a potentially long wait. The process is straightforward. Bring all necessary materials and some money: an application form (download, print, fill out, and sign from the government website), a receipt with sales tax, a receipt with HIN(or a printed HIN photo), MSO. The title will be mailed to your address. You can also pay extra for an immediate quick title.
